So, only a few hours after allowing anonymous comments on this blog, I’ve already had spam.
Here is the so-called comment I received:
“Thank you, I have recently been looking for info approximately this topic for a while and yours is the best I have came upon so far. However, what about the bottom line? Are you positive in regards to the source?”
This might sound reasonable if it hadn’t been for the fact that it was added to my review of the children’s picture book Puddle Hunters.
I do still get the occasional piece of spam, but this was anonymous. The truly weird thing was that usual spam has a link to some advertising web site, whether it’s selling health tonics or viagra. As an anonymous comment it didn’t supply links. So, what was the purpose of it?
There are some weird people out there!

There are some really strange things going on with spam comments. A few years ago my blog was inundated for a few weeks. Then they just went away. There have been other odd things. Lately I have not been getting hit too hard.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you haven’t had any problems recently, Brian! have had several, clearly from the same person in one day, very strange ones! I published one comment, asking them to give their name, but they didn’t. One had a link, which turned out to be to a computer advertising site, clearly not belonging to this person, at this stage, I’m going to put any anonymous comment not relevant to the post into spam.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I have my site set to allow anon comments or not (I followed the setting instructions as per A-Z site so I assume so?) - so far I haven't had any and haven't had a problem with spam. BUT I do pay for security etc on my website so it's possible they aren't making it to the post.
ReplyDeleteI see similar comments on other sites, but mine manages to block them - or asks me to approve them or not.
ReplyDeleteTrue, and also, Wordpress is different from Blogger. In the Blogger settings, allowing anyone to comment, as opposed to those with Google accounts, allows anonymous comments, including spam. It’s not as bad as it could be, because I have my moderation on, but still annoying. I have refused to do the picture confirm thing, which drives me nuts on other sites.
ReplyDeleteHi Roland! Moderation does almost the same thing, it’s just irritating, and I’ve had five comments from the same weirdo, all quite polite, but anonymous and irrelevant to the post. I’ve moved them to spam.
ReplyDeleteI keep getting those too - it's weird! Ever since Blogger changed how we can do moderation it's been a royal pain.
ReplyDeleteThey do keep changing things, Tasha, don’t they? But I hate Wordpress, which is too fiddly and confusing for me, and for now, at least, this is simpler. Moderation, though, allows me to control the anonymous comments.
